GRISWOLD: Reduced damage on NightmareThe Gift box has been removed. Median XL feels like they took D2 and took everyone's ideas that were 'wouldn't it be cool if D2 had this' and added all of them in. It is quite challenging though, I could see more casual gamers struggling with it a little bit.
This thread is to discuss an awesome mod of Diablo 2 called Median XL. There used to be a thread on that a few years ago, which was quite active. Hoping to get the same response here.

Median XL is unquestionably the #1 Diablo mod of all time.A few words about classic MXL vs ultimative. CMXL is still a very, very good game. It is not really outdated nor sucky. However ultimative adds a large amount of end game ubers content and it makes the early game a lot less difficult/annoying. So mostly, people play ultimative.
Current version is ultimative 14, however that has some bugs so I'm currently playing version 13.Bring it on! You can dig through the changelogs in the documentation if you want to know the precise changes from version to version. However this is what I observed myself, regarding early game and Destruction ubers.Early game changes in ultimativeLevel Challenge 1 addedCharacter orb addedBlood moor density ramped upGift box from Grizwold with class specific itemsSignets of gold in inventory at startJust easier in general.Uberquest changes - DestructionButcher: He's the same, except now he heals himself sometimes.Infernal machine: I think the elites are more powerful, and the tower also casts Deathstrike. Charm is also improved.Tal Rasha: It's the same.Creature of flame: SameTran Athualua: This place is changed greatly on destruction, hatred and terror ( for challenges ) remain same. Amazons now use arrowside upon death which you need to keep dodging. Priestesses have a lot more hp so they are harder to kill and they use tremor to knock your hp down. I think the drop rate of uniques isn't as good as it was before.
Still you will probably be running this place dozens of times anyway, at least to get perfect charm and trophy. Finally, there is one place where you can summon a heroic uber to fight ( Athualua ).Death projector: Same, except sometimes it can cast an opposite Death spiral when attacked. That's in the docs, didn't see it though.Akarat: SameAzmodan: Some of the elites are buffed ( Unseelie lady silences now ), but otherwise same.Aldric Jitan: SameKhalimgrad: I think the avatar was healing himself more than I remembered. Whatever this quest is stupid anyway.King Koth: SameKurast 3000 BA: It is a little harder but the drop rate of set items has been boosted by a lot, making this a prime farming area.Island of Sunless Sea: This place got boosted tremendously. The monsters are all different, they're harder to kill and priests use a very damaging yellow ball.Legacy of Blood: Bartuc's hp has been boosted by a lot, so this isn't a free win any more. Use tough summons.Judgement day: The avatars are harder to kill and summon more nephalems. Otherwise it's the same.Bremmtown: Same.Toraja: Maybe it's a bit more difficult?
Imo only character that is actually good at Toraja is RC necromancer.Quov Tsin: He now uses a physical component in his death beam, so get 100 iDRRathma's square: There are big scimitars added that are almost unkillable. Leave them alone and it's pretty much the same.Cathedral of vanity: Considerably more dangerous because now three units - two clerics and the crystal ball have boss mods, instead of just the crystal ball. This means that cursed/extra strong is much more likely there, retry until you get rid of cursed at least. Also, ball can be elemental immune if it spawned magic resistant or spectral hit.Inarius revenge: Minions use deathstrike on death. Still easymode.Bull Prince Rodeo: Is considerably more difficult due to the fact that he heals himself.
So you need strong single target dmg and constantly engage him. Just hit a little bit- run away, doesn't work at all anymore.Duncraig: No changes, but in ultimative 14 the map is changed and requires teleport to get to places. This is one of the reasons I didn't upgrade yet. Dunc is my favourite uber.Belial: The big change is that the ancients way gets locked after you go down into the heroic level, limiting cheese options. I didn't kill him yet. Belial is a d!ck in cMXL, and he's a d!ck in ultimative as well.Astrogha: tried it once and failed, no changes that I could see.Kingdom of shadow: The big change is the addition of darkwardens who use retaliate to knock you back. I didn't succeed yet but my character and items are much weaker than what I had in cMXL.
I did all of the ultimative ubers that I have completed so far, within the space of a week and a half. Although levelling up untwinked through the early game took over a month- I was playing some HC characters too at the time.
I kept track of the order of uberquest completion in both cMXL and ultimative. I've been playing Single Player for about four months now. I agree with you this mod is outstanding!! I was an avid D2 player and played D3 when it came out. But this mod has recaptured the fun, excitement, and character building of the game more than I could hope for.I don't have any screen shots to share, but it is funny/interesting when I see your gear pics. I will find some unique or SU or Set item and think how I could build a 'toon around it and off I go to start another character. Such fun with this mod and I play almost everyday and have yet to complete everything.Tons of content and challenge!!
